Halifax Panthers vs Doncaster RLFC

'The Digital Den' Matchday E-Programme -
Sponsored by Collett & Sons

Dear Panthers Supporters

As we gear up for another thrilling home fixture, I’d like to extend a warm welcome to Carl Hall and the Doncaster RLFC Directors. Richard Horne's men arrive at The Shay following a hard-fought match against Oldham, and we anticipate a stern test from their well-drilled side.

Kyle, Tabs, and the coaching staff have been working hard to get the squad back on track after last week’s result against Toulouse. I’m told the attitude and focus in training have been top-class, and I know the boys will be determined to turn that effort into a winning performance today.

In line with our ambition to elevate the matchday experience and engage a younger generation of Panthers fans, I’m delighted to welcome CamrinWatsin as today’s pre-match and half-time entertainment. A platinum-selling dance artist with hits like “Kisses” and “Craving For You”, Camrin has performed across the globe, and we’re thrilled to bring his talent to The Shay. Huge thanks to our benefactor for making this happen.

I’d also like to recognise the continued support of our incredible fanbase—and in particular extend a heartfelt thank you to Elite Thermal Insulations, FAX Trust, and all Squad Builder members for backing the club’s latest loan arrangements and upcoming signings – watch this space!! Your commitment and generosity are never taken for granted and continue to play a vital role in building the squad.

So let’s raise the volume today — get behind the boys, welcome Camrin with energy, and help create another unforgettable day at The Shay.

Up the Panthers!

KYLE EASTMOND on bouncing back from Toulouse, and embracing the challenge from Doncaster

After last weekend's game in Toulouse, we were disappointed and rightly so. We want to win every game we play and couldn't manage to get the right performance out there but these things happen.

I've been there and done it myself as a player, you go with all the right intent but sometimes it just doesn't happen for you. Let's not get away from the fact, this group of players have been brilliant in every match up to now. But we can't ignore the fact that we're still working on that consistency, day after day and week after week.

Of course, I was shocked, I didn't expect us to be beaten but at the same time, these things do happen. We prepared well, the lads were diligent in their preparations, it just didn't unfold as we expected. There's loads to work on but at the same time, we're still a very good team.

It was great to see so many Fax Fans over there as well. To be honest, for most of us guys it was our first time going over to Toulouse with Halifax so you don't really know what to expect. It's just unbelievable for us really, I said to the lads before the game actually, you can see these people are starting to believe in what they're doing.

Unfortunately, we couldn't perform the way their efforts deserved but it was so good to see. Especially with all the money that they had to put in as well, it doesn't go unnoticed by any of us their efforts so we thank you all for your support.

It's great to see as well that we've got CamrinWatsin down for the pre match entertainment. I think his song 'Kisses' is one of the songs the players use in the changing rooms for pre match pump up anyway, which is great isn't it! With initiatives like this, whatever is beneficial for the club, we'll support it.

But we're fully focused on the game, and we will be on game day. There's no doubt about that, we'll focus on what we're there to do and that's win a game for Halifax and we'll let the DJ do his part for the crowd as well.

This could be our last home game at The Shay for a while, and it's always important for us to send the fans away happy. There'll be no extra efforts or anything special, these lads are going to go and give everything for the badge as they do all the time.

Even when you go and get beaten over in France, that's not a question of intent. The lads will go out there every single time to make the fans proud, and if it is the last game at The Shay for a while, it's a shame but I can guarantee the players will be giving everything every week no matter where we play.

Today, we face Doncaster who are a good team. They're a better team that what the table might suggest, they've got a lot of good strike players in the back line, and some experience in the backs as well.

Briscoe and Lynne, big strong fellas, Hall who is a fantastic player and always has been, some danger in the halves and a good left footed kicking game from the half back as well.

But the forward pack are experienced and tough as well, so it's going to be a good tough game this one. I've been really impressed by them actually so it's brilliant for our lads, they're going to have a real tough game on their hands and I'm looking forward to the challenge.

It's exactly the kind of game we need to get back on it after last week, you all know there are no easy games in this league. And that's what we want, we don't want to turn up and play easy games, we want to play against good tough teams and this is definitely one. It's going to be a good contest.

Player Profile

Quickfire Questions with Fax Centre Brad Graham

Rapid-fire Q&A

Q: How did you get started playing the game?
A: I started playing in high school, I originally played football until I was about 12 years old and then one of my mates said to try Rugby League. I played with him for the school team and from there joined Stanningley Rangers before going into the professional game with Castleford.

Q: What is your favourite thing about being a Rugby League player?
A: I think one of my favourite things is probably the environment, and the craic you have with your mates. Doing something that we all love, making friends for life, and just the banter we have in the changing room.

Q: Do you have any superstitions?
A: I don't, to be honest! I know some probably do but I'm one of those people that doesn't overthink things. I just more or less turn up on the day and play.

Q: Who was your Rugby Hero as a kid?
A: I think one of the obvious ones, I bet everybody says this, Sam Burgess! I think he was just an all round tough individual, played the game on the borderline sometimes but always tough.

Q: What do you do for a day job when you're not playing Rugby?
A: I'm a builder, I work in construction. I'm self employed and work for a company over in Wakefield called Church View Building and Gardening Services. So yeah, that's what I do when I'm not playing Rugby.

Q: What is your dream holiday destination?
A: I'd have to say Australia. I've always said I want to go, I'd like to go and watch the NRL over there so maybe me and the missus will go travelling a bit down under one day.

Q: What's your karaoke song?
A: I'm not really a karaoke person but if I was going to do one, I'd probably say 'The Script - Breakeven' or 'Hall of Fame'.

Q: What's your favourite cheat day meal?
A: Probably an Indian. If I was going more down the basic route, a Chicken Tikka Masala but I do like a Chicken Balti as well. It's got to be a sit down one though, not a takeaway!

Q: If you could switch lives with anybody in the world for a day, who would it be ?
A: Probably whoever the richest person is, just to see what not actually having to go to work to earn a living would be like. Spend a bit of money and get up to a few naughty things! [Laughs]

Q: What's one thing you're unbeatable at?
A: I'd have to say pool or darts. I'm not a bad hand at throwing darts and with a pool cue in my hands.

Q: You find a crystal ball. What is one thing you'd like to know about the future?
A: If Halifax Panthers are going to be at the top of the table by the end of the year!

STANDING THE
TEST OF TIME

Enjoying his 11th season in hometown blue and white, 2025 is a very special year for Winger James Saltonstall

Awarded a Testimonial at Halifax

It's obviously a massive honour to be granted a testimonial year by the Rugby Football League. I think 11 years service at one club shows loyalty and commitment from both parties. And with Halifax being my home town club, it means a bit more than it would if it was anywhere else.

We've had a good start to this year so far so hopefully we can continue that for the rest of the year, and people can get on board with my testimonial and support it where they can.

When I joined the club, I'd just turned 21. I think when I first came, at the time I thought I might come for a year or two and then go back to full time rugby. I always backed my ability and thought I was good enough to play at a higher level after coming through the system at Warrington.

But I think after I got here, obviously it's my hometown club, we had a good few years when the middle 8s was around and I just enjoyed playing here and got settled. I had a job and career outside of Rugby, I'd just bought my first house and it would've been a big change to go back to full time. I had a few options but I decided that in the longer term, it was better for me to stay somewhere that I wanted to play and progress in my career away from the game as well as for Halifax. As the rest is obviously history.

Favourite Halifax Moments and Teammates

I've been a Halifax fan all my life, my dad used to take me to Thrum Hall when I was really young. He told me I was ran across the pitch at half time and someone had to come and bring me back. And then I'd come down to The Shay with my dad and sit in the Skircoat Stand and watch the games, before I went on to become a ball boy at 10.

So the club has been a big part of my life and representing them was something I was always destined to do. I've had some great times at the club obviously, and met some great people and teammates through the years.

When I look back at my Halifax career, and some of the players I enjoyed playing with.

Back in the early days, I was good mates with Jonno (Ben Johnston). We had some good trips over to Toulouse and down to Cheltenham race course over the years that I don't really remember much of [laughs] but they were different times. Obviously, we had Muzza (Scott Murrell) who was a great player but just as great a bloke off the field as well. He was the life and soul of the club.

Ben Kaye, Steve Tyrer, Big Mitch Cahalane from Aus, Ben Heaton, Kevin Larroyer, Ben Kavanagh, Will Sharp, Brandon Moore, and people like that, they were great characters as well.

Obviously, we've still got Bob Fairbank and Adzy Tangata now. They've been good friends since the early days. You forget over the years how many people you actually play with because teams split up year on year, people move on but those are some of the lads I've enjoyed playing with the most.

When talking about the games and moments though, there's a fair few that spring to mind.

Barrow away on a Monday night when we went down to 11 men. Long journey up to Cumbria, Greg and Titus both got sent off, 13 against 11 and we still ended up scoring more points going uphill as well. We all dug in for each other, that was a great day.

Obviously, Toronto away, that was a really good experience and a good trip. It was gutting what happened with that club, it would've been good to grow the game and would've been a success I think. It was a great place to go and play, good crowds, good city to go and visit. And then we had a good few days out after the game which obviously helps you remember it as a good memory.

A lot of people talk about Wembley but I think beating London away in the semi final, that was probably bigger than the final itself. They went on to get promoted to Super League that year, we hadn't won there in 20 years and they were a tough team to beat on their own patch. That was a tough, nervy game but we managed to get the job done.

I always enjoyed the middle 8s games against Super League teams, but the one where we put 50 odd points on Bradford last game of the season in 2015, that was a really good way to finish my first year at the club.

There was a Summer Bash where we went and beat Fev 37-0 at Blackpool one year, we absolutely battered them. Then the other one where we were losing 18-4 against Fev again and Jonno and Muzza scored to win it late on and he got his belly out in front of the fans. That was a good one.

I've been lucky enough to score a few match winners in Bradford Derbies at The Shay over the years as well which is always nice. And then the one last year against the Bulls to confirm our Championship status after the season we'd had, it ended up being a really important try for a club I've been at for a long time and that I love.

Testimonial Plans and Events

We've had some great events already for my testimonial year. We had a launch night at The Shay, we had a race night at King Cross Park in April which went really well. We launched a shirt and other merch which has gone down really well, so we're off to a good start.

My next event coming up is on Sunday 1st June, we've got a cricket match up at Outlane Cricket Club. There's going to be a few current faces and a few old faces turning out and playing, it'll be the T20 format which will start around 1:30pm.

Saturday 21st June there's going to be 'An Evening With' event. We've already got Scott Murrell and Leon Pryce confirmed, we're going to get a third guest to go with them as well. Details of that will be released soon.

After that, we're gonna have a family fun day at King Cross Park in August. There's going to be live music, bouncy castles for the kids, just a good fun family day out. Hopefully everybody can get involved and tickets for that will be going out shortly.

We've got a golf day on Friday 22nd August and then a Testimonial Dinner on 22nd November as well, that will be kind of my closing dinner but obviously, I'm still planning on having a game next pre season as the Warrington one this year was cancelled due to the weather. So there's plenty coming up.

Hopefully people can come out and support wherever they can. I just want to thank all those that have supported me so far, from my family to my committee and all my sponsors, and to Elite Thermal Insulations who have sponsored my testimonial year as well. Your support is greatly appreciated.

Introducing Doncaster RLFC

Founded in 1951, Doncaster Rugby League have endured a tough existence in the sport of Rugby League during their 74 year history.

The club has never won a major trophy in their history, often struggling to avoid propping up the professional leagues in the RFL system, finishing bottom of the division every year from 1956 to 1963. Interesting fact, their traditional home colours are blue and amber after Leeds Rhinos donated their home shirts to them when they were founded.

In 1980, Yorkshire Television made a one-off documentary called Another Bloody Sunday, the TV crew followed the Dons as they tried to avoid finishing the season without winning a single game. The cameras turned up at Tattersfield – now a piece of wasteland on the entrance to Bentley – to document the relentless struggles of the town’s hapless Rugby League team.

It would go on to be a classic piece of television, and is still fondly remembered in Rugby League circles. One particular scene saw club secretary and general manager Tom Morton receive a copy of the Guinness Book of World Records,
featuring the Dons’ losing streak, stating his team has an entry for most games without a win - 40.

Surprisingly though, Doncaster didn’t finish bottom the season in which the documentary was filmed. The team they eventually beat, Huyton, did.

Things improved slightly in the modern era though. Promotion back to the old Northern Ford Premiership in 1999 saw the club able to build consistently on and off the field. A highlight being reaching the quarter finals of the Challenge Cup in 2002 before bowing out to Super League's Castleford Tigers at Wheldon Road.

A string of relegations and promotions followed as the Dons bounced between the leagues. However, following the COVID 19 pandemic, the club set their sights on firmly re-establishing themselves as a solid Championship club. They managed it on the third attempt, eventually winning the League One play off final after back to back defeats the previous two seasons to earn their way back into the second tier in 2024.

A respectable 8th place finish in their first year back under head coach Richard Horne gave the South Yorkshire outfit foundations to build on for the future.

The 2025 season has been a mixed bag for the Dons so far. Sitting 8th in the table with 3 wins from their opening 8 games, they've shown flashes of what they're capable of.

A brilliant 10-6 home win over Toulouse Olympique added to a Good Friday Derby victory over Sheffield Eagles has been mixed in with defeats to Barrow and Oldham, plus a 66-0 mauling at the hands of York Knights.

Richard Horne's men arrive at The Shay with a point to prove, and will be determined to kickstart their ascent up the Betfred Championship table.

HALIFAX INDEPENDENT SUPPORTERS UPDATE

The Trust will be at the game today presenting the club with a cheque for £5000. It is again with your help and support that we are able to do this via our membership, stalls and attending our events.

Last season, we were proud sponsors of Halifax Panthers Wheelchair Rugby League and England wheelchair player, Robert Hawkins. On Good Friday, he presented us with his playing shirt. We can't wait to see him in action again this year and wish him and the rest of the team, all the very best.

This is all due to your fantastic support and as we are very very low on matchday merchandise, have you any preloved merchandise that you can donate?

We can collect items if local or bring to one of our stalls on matchdays.

PANTHERS - ONES TO WATCH

OWEN
MCCARRON

DOB: 2/3/1999
Position: Second Row
Number: 11

Enjoying a superb first season in blue and white following his winter move from Whitehaven, Owen McCarron has quickly made himself known to the Fax Faithful.

Huge hits in defence, dangerous with ball in hand on the edges and with three tries to his name so far, McCarron is becoming a fan favourite on the terraces.

The 26 year old always gives 100% effort and commitment, his go forward and endeavour in the engine room of the pack will go a long way to providing a platform for the Panthers backline to perform this afternoon.

EDENE
GEBBIE

DOB: 6/5/1995
Position: Winger
Number: 18

Papua New Guinea international winger Gebbie joined Doncaster from Whitehaven for the 2025 season, and has proven to be a shrewd piece of business so far for the South Yorkshire outfit.

7 Tries in his first 8 appearances for the Dons, including a hattrick in last weekend's defeat to Oldham, sees the 29 year old sitting third in the Betfred Championship try scoring charts.

With the Panthers looking to bounce back from defeat at Toulouse, they will need to keep an eye on Gebbie to ensure he doesn't further add to his tally today.

LOUIS
JOUFFRET

DOB: 24/8/1995
Position: Full Back
Number: 1

After switching to full back in 2025, French international Louis Jouffret has injected himself into the Panthers prolific start to their 2025 league campaign.

Leading points scorer in the Betfred Championship, Jouffret brought up his century with the club after making his 100th appearance in blue and white last weekend.

Although he has struggled at times under the high ball, cutting out those errors can tighten up Jouffret's impact on the game from the back. What can't be questioned though is his ability to make something happen with ball in hand. If he can find space and utilise his speed through the gap, the French International will have a big say on today's result.
